Most of us have watched in amazement while computers have evolved from the lumbering giants of the mid 60’s to the sleek and speedy hand-held devices of the current generation. I remember thinking “wow” when I got my first spell checker. But these little devices are just “toys” when compared to the human brain. Try reading the following “spell checker” exercise and see what I mean: I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. Rscheearchres at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, fnoud the pweor of the hamun mnid nthonig sohrt of phaonmneal. Tehy lraeend it dseon't mttaer in waht oedrr the ltteers in a wrod aeppar. The olny iprmoatnt tinhg is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotle mses and you can slitl raed it wouthit a porbelm. This is bcuasee the hmaun mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Who siad slpeling was iptmorant?
Okay, were you able to read that? Amazing, isn’t it? No computer could make sense out of that paragraph, but God made our brains with immeasurable capabilities. If He lets time last, today’s marvels will become tomorrow’s relics because of human brain power at work in technological advancements.
There is not a single piece of evidence that even hints at the notion that the animals (our supposed cousins) have the same capabilities. Man is unique. We are the product of the greatest design and engineering project in history. We are NOT merely a collection of atoms that just happened to align themselves in this fortuitous pattern. Indeed, we are “...fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). No other creature on the planet has a brain like ours.
The wonder of human intelligence pales in comparison to the astonishing genius of God’s love and power as revealed in the plan of salvation. He not only wants “all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4), but He makes it possible through His Gospel. It is “the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16).
The largest super computer in the world cannot save us. Einstein did not write a formula that we can follow. But God has a plan that saves and He put a “computer” between our ears that can process and understand His will. In fact, He commands us to understand it (Ephesians 5:17), which must mean we can IF we want to.
The problem is that few people want to make the effort. We had rather use our brain power in other endeavors. But there is no higher or better use of our God-given, “computer” than to know Him and His will. Try it and you will be amazed! KD |
